(WORK IN PROGRESS)
Foxes are symbolic of tons of things, but overall symbolize intelligence. Many cultures view this as either good or bad (good: general intelligence, knack for survival; bad: deception, trickery). However, most cultures acknowledge that there is both good and bad when concerning foxes, and that the intelligence it symbolizes can be used for both good or bad. To highlight this duality, I am painting two foxes arranged in a circular form, one black and one white (but nothing to connote that one is either good or bad) with patterns from cultures that place a high significance on foxes in their folklore/legends/mythology.
Research on patterns:
Japanese
Celtic
Chinese
(My own photo)
Greek
Process:
1. Starting with outlining the geeomtry on the board. Since this painting relies heavily on geometry and symmetry to send the right message about balance and duality, everything is measured out.
2. The foxes are drawn in symmetrical to each other, using the geometric guidelines to make sure they are drawn and aligned the same way.
3. A base paint (watered down acrylic) is applied to the foxes. I started to pencil in a pattern in the middle (Japanese inspired).
